Fortune Ferry Central - Hung Hom Route is a cross-harbour licensed ferry service operated by Fortune Ferry. It runs between Central Pier No. 8 and Hung Hom South Pier.

History[]

Star Ferry era[]

On 1 June 1965, Star Ferry operated the Central - Hung Hom route.

Since 1 April 1999, Star Ferry has been operating the Central - Hung Hom ferry service as a licensed ferry. With the improvement of the public transport network and the relocation of the Central Ferry Piers in 2006, the average daily patronage of the Central - Hung Hom route has been declining. In view of the persistent loss in the operation of the route and the expectation that there would not be a significant increase in patronage, Star Ferry ceased to operate the route on 31 March 2011 upon expiry of its licence.[1]

Discontinuation and resumption[]

Between September and December 2010, the Transport Department (TD) conducted two tender exercises to select a suitable ferry operator to continue the service of this route. Prior to the second tender exercise, the TD had consulted the relevant District Councils (DCs) and the local community on ways to enhance the viability of the route to attract bids from operators, and subsequently relaxed the service requirements. However, the TD did not receive any tender at the close of the two tenders.

In recent years, there have been views in the community that additional cross-harbour ferry routes should be explored. From 27 August to 27 September 2018, the TD invited expressions of interest from those interested in operating the Central - Hung Hom route to submit tenders. Two EOIs were received within the specified period. After reviewing the contents of the EOIs, the Department will consult the relevant stakeholders to plan for a more specific ferry service option. Subject to the progress of the consultation, TD expects to invite tenders for the Central-Hung Hom ferry service in early 2019, with a view to commissioning the service in the second quarter of 2019 at the earliest.[2] As a result, TD invited tenders on 13 December 2019 for the licensed ferry service from Central to Hung Hom, and up to the closing date of 24 January 2020, a total of two companies submitted tenders.

Fortune Ferry era[]

After a thorough assessment, the Transport Department announced on 23 March 2020 that Fortune Ferry was selected to operate the ferry service.[3] The operator undertook to progressively introduce new and environmentally-friendly vessels to the fleet, disseminate real-time arrival information of the ferry routes through smartphone applications within six months of commencement of the service, and enhance the pier facilities, such as setting up an electronic ticketing system, electronic display panels showing estimated arrival/departure times, and provision of free Wi-Fi service, etc. [4]

After a round of preparatory work, the Central - Hung Hom ferry route was launched on 28 June.[5]

  • 3 March 2022: This route suspended service due to the shortage of crew caused by 5th wave of novel coronavirus pandemic.[6]
  • 19 April 2022: Service was resumed with the temporary reduction of peak hour sailings.
  • 29 May 2022: The first sailing on holidays was advanced and headways during weekdays were reduced to 40-minute intervals.[7]
  • 3 September 2023: Fares were adjusted.[8]
